In French, most words ending in "-ier" are masculine, but not all of them. However, if the following table, all the words are masculine, this is because all of these words refer to trees or plants, which are generally considered masculine in French. It's worth noting that in French, the gender of a noun is not always predictable based on its meaning or spelling, and there are many exceptions and irregularities.

Olivier  Olive tree  J'ai acheté de l'huile d'olive chez l'olivier. (I bought some olive oil from the olive tree.)
Pommier  Apple tree  Les enfants ont cueilli des pommes dans le pommier. (The children picked apples from the apple tree.)
Cerisier  Cherry tree  Il y a un cerisier dans le jardin qui donne beaucoup de fruits. (There's a cherry tree in the garden that produces a lot of fruit.)
Noyer  Walnut tree  Les noix viennent du noyer. (Walnuts come from the walnut tree.)
Pêcher  Peach tree  Nous avons mangé des pêches cueillies dans le pêcher. (We ate peaches picked from the peach tree.)
Oranger  Orange tree  Il y a un oranger dans la cour qui sent très bon. (There's an orange tree in the courtyard that smells very good.)
Poirier  Pear tree  Les poires viennent du poirier. (Pears come from the pear tree.)
Arbousier  Strawberry tree  L'arbousier donne des fruits en forme de petites fraises. (The strawberry tree produces fruit in the shape of small strawberries.)
Noisetier  Hazelnut tree  Les noisettes viennent du noisetier. (Hazelnuts come from the hazelnut tree.)
Peuplier  Poplar tree  Les feuilles des peupliers tremblent au vent. (The leaves of the poplar trees tremble in the wind.)
Limettier  Lime tree  On peut faire une tisane avec les fleurs de limettier. (You can make a herbal tea with the flowers of the lime tree.)
Citronnier  Lemon tree  J'ai planté un citronnier dans mon jardin. (I planted a lemon tree in my garden.)
Framboisier  Raspberry bush  Les framboises poussent sur les rameaux du framboisier. (Raspberries grow on the branches of the raspberry bush.)
Cassissier  Blackcurrant bush  Les cassis sont des petits fruits noirs qui poussent sur le cassissier. (Blackcurrants are small black fruits that grow on the blackcurrant bush.)

Emma, Jack, Olivia, and Ethan are participating in a team competition that involves running, jumping, swimming, and cycling for a total of 4 km. Each team member picks an activity and must take turns completing a section of the course by doing their activity.

Emma will swim for 200 m, then Jack will cycle the next 500 km, followed by Olivia who will run for the next 250 m, and finally Ethan will jump the next 50 m. They will repeat their activity until the team completes the 4 km race.

  1. How many times does each member have to do their activity to complete the race? 

  2. What fraction of the race does each team member complete? Put the fractions in order from least to greatest.
